
Axel Haverich is Head of the Department of Cardiothoracic, Transplant and Vascular Surgery at Hanover Medical School (MHH), where he received his training in Medical Science as a student.
From 1983 to 1984 , Axel Haverich held a scholarship of the German Research Foundation and worked as research assistant at Stanford University. He became Head of the Department for Cardiac and Vascular Surgery at the University of Kiel in 1993. In 1995, Axel Haverich was awarded the Leibniz prize of the German Research Foundation and became Professor at the MHH one year later.
Axel Haverich has established the world wide largest clinical lung transplantation program. Moreover, his group was the first to generate and clinically transplant tissue engineered heart valves and trachea patches.
