Hans Joas

Hans Joas is Max Weber Professor of Sociology and Director of the Max Weber Center for Advanced Cultural and Social Studies at the University of Erfurt. He is also Professor and a member of the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago.

In 1979, he obtained his Ph.D. from FU Berlin and worked, from 1984 to 1987, as a Heisenberg fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin. From 1990 until 2002, he held a chair at the John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies and the Institute for Sociology at FU Berlin. In addition, Hans Joas has taught at many institutions in Europe and the US as visiting professor. He is a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and currently serves as Vice President of the International Sociological Association.

His research focuses on social philosophy and sociological theory, sociology of values and religion as well as sociology of war and violence.
